IBP Paving is a paving contractor and installer, not a supplier. We quote the job, excavate, lay and finish it ourselves, and the same crew puts in the soakwells, edges and retaining walls that go with it. Each service below has its own page covering the method, the materials and indicative Perth industry ranges for cost.
Brick paving
Clay and concrete pavers laid on compacted sand, the standard Perth method on our free draining soils. Driveways get a compacted road base layer under the bedding sand.
Granite, limestone, travertine, sandstone and crazy paving, laid on a mortar bed over a concrete base where the stone needs it and on compacted sand where it does not.
We take on small repairs as well as new work. Most sunken paving in Perth is fixed by lifting the pavers, re-bedding the sand and relaying them, not by replacing the lot.
Soakwells are sized and set back to your local council's guidance and installed before the paving goes down. Limestone retaining walls and paving led landscaping are quoted as part of the same job.
The ground here matters. The Wanneroo corridor sits on pale grey Bassendean sand, which the City of Wanneroo lists by name for Wanneroo, Tapping and Wangara, and Landsdale shares the same sands as neighbouring Wangara and Wanneroo. That sand drains fast, which is why Perth brick paving is laid flexibly on compacted sand rather than on concrete, and why it is the bedding sand, not the paver, that gives out after 10 to 20 years. Closer to the coast, the Joondalup suburbs sit on yellow Spearwood sand over Tamala Limestone, where excavation can hit rock, so we check for it before we quote a soakwell.
Every council in our service area requires stormwater to be kept on the lot. The City of Joondalup calls it a statutory obligation to confine runoff within property boundaries, and the City of Wanneroo information sheet sets the soakwell setback at no less than the width of the soakwell from buildings and boundaries. We size and position soakwells to the council soakwell requirements for your suburb before any paving is laid.

How we work
Site visit and written quote. We measure the area, check the falls and access, and confirm where the stormwater will go. The quote is written and fixed, with the paver, pattern, base depth and edge restraint spelt out, as our guide to what is in a paving quote explains.
Excavation and base. Old paving or turf comes out and the area is excavated to depth, with compacted road base under driveways and compacted, screeded washed yellow paving sand under paths and patios. Soakwells go in first, before a single paver is laid.
Laying, cutting and edges. The pattern is laid from a straight string line, with herringbone for driveways where the load calls for it. Cuts are done with a wet saw, and open edges get concrete haunching or a mortared border course, especially on driveways.
Compaction, jointing and clean up. The finished area is plate compacted and the joints swept with jointing sand. We leave the site clean and hand over the warranty paperwork.

How much does paving cost in Perth per square metre?
It depends on three things: the paver, the site preparation and access. As an indicative Perth industry range, concrete pavers alone retail at roughly $37 to $66 per square metre ex yard before laying, sand, base and removal of old paving are added. Natural stone laid on mortar costs more in labour than brick on sand. We give a written supply and lay quote after a site visit, and our cost guide explains what goes into it.
Is paving cheaper than concrete?
Plain concrete is usually cheaper per square metre to pour, but pavers win over the life of the surface. On Perth's sandy soils a slab that settles cracks and has to be cut out, while a section of paving that sinks can be lifted, re-bedded and relaid for a fraction of the cost. Pavers also let you reach pipes and cables later without destroying the finish.
Are pavers laid on sand or concrete in Perth?
Most brick and concrete paving in Perth is laid flexibly on compacted, washed paving sand because the natural sand drains freely. Driveways get a compacted road base layer under the bedding sand and a concrete or mortared edge restraint. Natural stone, crazy paving and thin pavers are laid on a mortar bed over a concrete base.
How long does paving last?
The pavers themselves last 30 to 50 years or more; clay pavers hold their colour for 50 plus years, concrete pavers 25 to 40 with some surface fade. The bedding sand and joints are what fail first, usually after 10 to 20 years, which is why relaying rather than replacing is the normal repair in Perth. Idris and his team are extremely hardworking people, nothing is too hard, everything is done with smiles and politeness. Approx, 200 square metres of paving with 300x300mm x 60mm thick, heavy pavers, took 2days with a team of 5. They were hurting after the 1st day but they were back the next day to finish. Looks amazing. The bobcat team that did the earthworks were precise and efficient, and came back when the jobs were done to clean up the debris.
We had the area outside the laundry done and a strip along back of house (for dog to stay dry when raining), about a week & 1/2 later, this area had to be done by hand as the bobcat would not fit. The smiles from the team were back. Will extend the paving outside the laundry at a later date.
